Parent’s Guide to Senior Pictures: What You Need to Know

Why Senior Pictures Matter

Senior year is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone. While your teen might be excited for Instagram-worthy shots, you’re thinking about the memories—photos that will be in your home, graduation announcements, and albums for decades.

Senior portraits are more than just photos—they celebrate who your child has become. And as a parent, you play a big part in making the experience meaningful and enjoyable. This is for you parents!

When Should We Book Senior Portraits?

Best time to book: NOW!!! But seriously…

  • Summer before senior year starts
    • Waiting until the Fall is often too late if you’re looking to book with a busy photographer! HINT HINT!
    • Early birds get the worm! You have a lot of boxes to check Senior year. Your photographer should be one of the first!
  • Sessions fill quickly in peak months (August–October)
  • We offer BOOMerang sessions that allow seniors to come back throughout the year for quick mini sessions! Love the Fall colors but also want photos in your cap and gown? BOOMerang! Play sports in different seasons? BOOMerang!

Why it matters:
Booking early gives you the best dates and ensures enough time for yearbook deadlines, announcements, and gifts for the holidays. We also work with a lot of siblings of previous BBP seniors which means every year our schedule is partially filled before the current seniors are even out the door!

Choosing the Right Photographer

Here’s what to look for:

✅ A style that fits your family—timeless or trendy?
✅ Experience working with teens (posing matters!)
✅ Positive reviews and complete session galleries. Hiring a professional makes a difference!
✅ A photographer your teen can connect with

While we follow the trends, we strive to provide both timeless images and products that are true to color that will pass down generations to come but also stop you friends’ doom scrolling in their tracks! Photography is so much more than just clicking a button. I’ve been working with seniors almost exclusively for a decade (weddings for 10 years prior to that!). I take more pride in the experience and connection I make with the seniors and their parents than I do in the images themselves. Why? Without that connection and that level of trust, there is no feeling of genuine authenticity to the images! This is the key to our success year after year.

What to Bring to the Session

Use this checklist to prep:

💛 You! (Yes, parents are often the secret weapon for confidence and support)

👕 Multiple outfits (casual, dressy, and something personal)

👟 Accessories (hats, shoes, jewelry, letterman jacket, etc.)

💄 Touch-up items (hairbrush, makeup, lint roller)

⚽ Props that show personality (sports gear, books, instruments, car)

How to Help Your Senior Feel Comfortable

  • Keep it relaxed — Let the session feel like a celebration, not a chore. It’s awkward being in front of the camera. We’re here to have fun! If you’re tense, we’re all tense!
  • Let the photographer lead — SUPER important. You’ve done your research. You’ve looked through what seems like 1000’s of their images online. You’ve hired a professional. Let them do their thing!
  • Hype them up — Be encouraging and positive from the sidelines! You’re not just shoved to the sideline during our sessions, however. You’re part of the team! Want to take cell phone pics? Do it! Want to hold a light? Perfect! Parents have had a hand in creating some of our most amazing portraits.

After the Session: What to Expect

  1. 📩 Preview gallery delivered in 1–2 weeks
  2. 💻 Zoom or in-person reveal to choose favorites
  3. 🖨️ Product ordering — digitals, albums, prints
  4. 📦 Final delivery of printed products in 3–4 weeks

Final Thoughts for Parents

Senior portraits aren’t just about yearbooks—they’re about this moment in your senior’s story. Choose a photographer who understands your senior and helps them feel confident and seen. I think we all know how much changes between that last year of high school and first year of college. The time to document this transition into adulthood is now!
