Preparing for a Family Photoshoot

You’re thinking of getting the family together for a family portrait. Maybe it’s for a Mother’s Day or Christmas gift, or maybe it’s time to update the picture above your mantel. No matter the reason, there are some things to think about before heading out to the photoshoot.

1. Who will be in the shoot? Whether it’s a family of three or a group of 10, not everyone is going to like being in front of the camera. It’s important to know your audience because not everyone, including the two-year-old, will be displaying their pearly whites. Personalities show and that’s what makes the best portraits. The smaller the child, the shorter the patience. You might want to bring a snack or two for the little ones because even 30 minutes can be a long time.

2. Where would you like the shoot to take place? The fall tends to be the choice for the farm-style look while spring is ideal for a garden shoot. Maybe you like parks? Urban style? Country? Think about your home’s decor and style because you probably wouldn’t want an urban-style picture hanging in your farm-style living room.

3. What will everyone wear? It’s important to tell your family where the photoshoot will be taking place so they can dress appropriately. Let them know if they need to wear a certain color or if they will need to wear proper shoes for where you plan to have pictures taken. Note: we recommend you coordinate your outfit, but not too much that it looks like it’s a uniform.

4. Pick a date. Pick a tentative date too. Mother Nature is unpredictable. It’s important to pick a date that will work for all, but it can be even more important to pick a possible makeup date that works, including your photographer’s busy schedule.

5. Relax! You might be the ultimate planner and the previously four items might have given you anxiety, but don’t let it. Mistakes will happen. We all know nothing goes perfect when you want it to. Don’t let it get to you. We will be there to help you along the way!
